Trama e commenti: vampiri.net - exxagon.it: «Quarto e, per ora, ultimo capitolo della saga Subspecies iniziata nel 1990. La Full Moon di Charles Band lascia definitivamente il mandato al regista Ted Nicolaou che pare essersi innamorato di Radu (o più probabilmente deve portare a casa la pagnotta) e quindi dirige, scrive la sceneggiatura e trova il produttore rumeno Vlad Paunescu per finanziare. Così, sotto la Castel Film Romania, e con l'appoggio distributivo della Full Moon, Subspecies 4 vede la luce. I problemi spuntano fin dall'inizio in quanto l'attrice Melanie Shatner e l'attore Kevin Spirtas, rispettivamente Rebecca e Mel nel film precedente, danno forfait all'ultimo momento, quindi Nicolaou decide di far morire i loro personaggi all'inizio del film con un incidente stradale. Per il resto il film presenta bene o male la stessa portata di sempre: il brutto vampiro Radu Vladislas in cerca della bella neo-vampirizzata Michelle che lui vorrebbe impalmare per l'eternità. Vengono introdotti nuovi personaggi, si avverte una certa attenzione nella fotografia e la location rumena funziona bene come sempre, ma ormai la storia è stanca e stanca. I soldi a disposizione per mettere in piedi questo direct-to-video sono evidentemente assai limitati (notare la scena dell'incidente e l'assenza degli effetti in stop-motion) e il risultato appare ancor più poveristico dei film precedenti. Nicolaou evidentemente conosce bene il vampiro che ha diretto nelle tre pellicole precedenti ma la storia manca di energia e a parte Anders Hove, come sempre convincente nei panni di Radu, il resto del cast passa inosservato. L'introduzione del mad doctor affascinato dal vampirismo, una sorta di Van Helsing al contrario, è una nota originale che però, inscritta in un film del genere, non fa la differenza. Subspecies 4 pare concludere con grande mediocrità una saga generalmente caratterizzata da mediocrità realizzativa con pochi guizzi creativi. Tuttavia alla lunga ci si affeziona al personaggio di Radu che nel divenire della saga ha la possibilità di mostrare le diverse facce della sua dannazione. Gli appassionati di vampiri potrebbero gradire ma di certo questo quarto capitolo non è il più solido della tetralogia».

The series ran from 1991 to 1998, and followed the exploits of vampire Radu Vladislas, portrayed continually by Anders Hove, and his efforts to turn Michelle Morgan into his fledgling. A spin-off film was released in 1997, which featured characters that would go on to appear in the final installment of the film series. Ted Nicolaou directed each of the five films, which included the spin-off; he also wrote the scripts for the sequels and spin-off. The series was shot on-location in Romania, utilizing stop-motion techniques to achieve the look the director wanted for the series' subspecies creatures. The series has had mixed reviews with critics citing vampire clichés as a downfall of the films, but generally commending the director's choice in filming in Romania, as well as the special effects used in the film. ... Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm (1998) begins with a badly burnt Radu able to find refuge in his crypt. A car accident takes the lives of everyone but Michelle, who is discovered by a stranger named Ana. Upon seeing Michelle's reaction to the sunlight, Ana takes her body to her former professor, Dr. Nicolescu, who quickly determines that Michelle is a vampire. When Michelle wakes, Dr. Nicolescu promises to cure her of her vampirism. Dr. Nicolescu is a vampire himself, but uses science to allow him to be immune to vampire weaknesses, with the exception of needing blood, and hopes to use Michell to get the blood stone and therefore a cure for his condition. With his strength restored, Radu travels to Bucharest to claim the financial wealth one of his previous "fledglings", Ash, has acquired in the Vladislas name. Radu enlists Ash's help to track down Michelle, while Ash's own fledgling, Serena, attempts to play Radu and Ash against each other. Radu discovers Michelle's location, and Dr. Nicolescu agrees to give her to Radu in exchange for three drops of blood from the Bloodstone. Radu agrees, but it was only a trick to allow Dr. Nicolescu the opportunity to capture and stake Radu. Michelle arrives releases Radu, and the two flee to safety. Serena arrives immediately after and gives Ana a key to the Vladislas crypt, where Radu is, with instructions to kill Radu. Ana and Dr. Nicolescu arrive at the tomb, but Radu awakens and kills Nicolescu. Radu turns his attention to Ana, but Michelle slices his throat, allowing Ana enough time to decapitate Radu. They burn his body and take the Bloodstone. Ash and Serena are waiting at the opening of the crypt, but a caretaker, hearing Ana's screams, opens the crypt and spills sunlight inside. Michelle is hidden in a coffin and transported out of the cemetery, while Radu's head sits on a pike burning in the sun».
