Trama e commenti: horrordrome.com - vampiri.net - sentieriselvaggi.it - exxagon.it: «Film sui vampiri della Full Moon di Charles Band, nota soprattutto negli anni '80/'90 per i suoi low budget dal successo altalenante. Band mette la mdp in mano al rumeno Ted Nicolau con il quale aveva già lavorato in Terror Vision (1986) quando ancora esisteva la casa di produzione Empire, dalle cui ceneri sorgerà la Full Moon. Un po' per risparmiare soldi e un po' per fare qualcosa di originale si va a girare direttamente in Romania, cosa che sembra ovvia ma non è, poiché fino al 1990 nessun film sui vampiri era stato girato nella terra di origine della leggenda. La mossa fa guadagnare al film un minimo di fascino perché, fra riprese in esterna e riti folkloristico-supertiziosi, si va al cuore del mito con popolani che saltano sulle tombe, che fanno processioni, che decapitano i morti vampirizzati, etc. Certo, le riprese in esterna non fanno che sottolineare la dimensione low budget dell'operazione, ma non si può avere tutto. La storia non è particolarmente originale relativamente ai vampiri, si tratta del solito amore impossibile fra non-morto e donna (bella) solo che qui la cosa si complica perché Radu è il brutto e cattivo vampiro in quanto figlio di Vladislav e una strega, mentre il bel Stephan è figlio di Vladislav e un'umana. In più si aggiunga la storia del bloostone, una pietra particolare che spilla sangue regalata dai popolani a Re Vladislav per fare in modo che si nutra direttamente usando la pietra ed eviti di vagare fra le lande ad uccidere innocenti. Quindi, fra amore e giochi di potere, si ha lo scontro fra Radu, la cui voce "dal profondo" la si può solo apprezzare nella versione originale del film, e Stephan, una sorta di Pierre Cosso dai denti lunghi. Come prevedibile, il budget striminzito limita parecchio il potenziale della storia vampiresca che manca del tutto dell'aura romantica-dannata secolare che dovrebbe avere e sembra piuttosto la narrazione delle scaramucce fra una sottospecie di vampiri di provincia. Assolutamente inutili ed esteticamente dannosi gli effetti speciali in stop motion che vedono dei goblins rossi (o piccoli diavoli) come protagonisti attivi: un tipo di SFX mai riuscito bene alla Full Moon che però, chissà perché, ha spessissimo voluto proporre giochi visivi in stop-motion. Non che sia tutto da buttare comunque. Tanto che si era in Romania, si approfittò per realizzare due seguiti; il quarto film è una produzione rumena distribuita dalla Full Moon. Tetralogia modesta ma vedibile. FORSE NON TUTTI SANNO CHE...  Il film è stato girato in Romania fra il 20 settembre e il novembre del 1990. Dai primi tre film della serie nasce lo spin-off Il Diario del Vampiro (Vampire Journals, 1997). Re Vladislav è interpretato da Angus Scrimm, il Tall Man della serie Phantasm».

The series ran from 1991 to 1998, and followed the exploits of vampire Radu Vladislas, portrayed continually by Anders Hove, and his efforts to turn Michelle Morgan into his fledgling. A spin-off film was released in 1997, which featured characters that would go on to appear in the final installment of the film series. To gain control over the Bloodstone, a relic that is said to drip the blood of the saints, Radu kills his father. In an effort to hurt his brother, Radu turns Mara and Lillian into vampires. Stefan, having fallen in love with Michelle, helps her try and free Mara and Lillian from Radu's control. Stefan drives a stake through Radu's heart and severs his head with a sword, killing Radu.
