Trama e commenti: bestmovie.it: «Il principe dei ladri compare per la prima volta sul grande schermo nel 1908 con il corto (il primo lungo su Robin Hood è del 1922) Robin Hood and His Merry Men di Percy Stow, una produzione inglese in bianco e nero del cinema muto (il sonoro al cinema arriva nel 1927 con Il cantante di Jazz) nella quale Robin salva un uomo dalla forca. Sempre dal Regno Unito, arriva la seconda pellicola sull’eroe leggendario, datata 1912: Robin Hood Outlawed. In questo film l’eroe salva Lady Marian da un cavaliere molesto. Nello stesso anno, anche negli Usa viene realizzato un film muto, e sempre in bianco e nero sull’eroe, diretto da Étienne Arnaud e Herbert Blaché: Robin Hood. Qui vediamo Robin contendersi l’amore di Lady Marion con Sir Guy di Gisbourne. Anche l’anno successivo il grande schermo ospita due produzioni, una made in UK e l’altra targata Usa. La prima, Days of Robin Hood, racconta dell’impresa di Robin per salvare uno dei suoi uomini, catturato dallo sceriffo di Nottingham. Per la prima volta, per le location viene scelta la vera contea di Nottingham. La seconda, invece, Robin Hood (conosciuta anche con il titolo di Robin Hood and Maid Marian), diretta da Theodore Marston ruota attorno a una gara di tiro con l’arco, che viene vinta naturalmente dal protagonista».

The Éclair studio, opened in 1911, was the first to be built in downtown Fort Lee, literally down the block from parts of Main Street frequently used by Biograph and other producers. The stated policy of Éclair’s president, Charles Jourjon, was to combine French dramatic and technical skills with American players, subjects, and scenery. To accomplish this Jourjon imported Étienne Arnaud, Ben Carré, Lucien Andriot, Émile Cohl, Maurice Tourneur, and many others, but Éclair suffered, especially in comparison with Pathé, from a lack of adequate distribution (at the time Arnaud filmed Robin Hood Éclair’s product was being distributed by Universal, but this relationship was never satisfactory).
