Esiste la "selva oscura", la valle infernale, con le mitiche apparizioni dei giganti Nembrot, Fialte e Anteo? Settecento anni fa, giusto un anno dal Giubileo, nell'ottobre 1301, sulla strada che da Firenze porta a Viterbo, una carrozza solca la vallata del Tevere, nella misteriosa Tuscia. Ombre di fastidiosi pensieri passano sul viso del nobile viaggiatore, Dante Alighieri, mentre il suo servo cerca la giusta direzione. Un incontro imprevisto: un pellegrino che delira contro il Giubileo. Un secondo incontro, a Bomarzo: un oste che affoga le sue anguille mentre racconta di un bosco sacro che fa impazzire gli uomini. Una notte passata a consumare candele e inchiostro inutilmente. E... l'entrata nella selva mostruosa. Più che cronaca di un evento storico, questo film vuole essere cronaca di uno stato di ispirazione, condizione privatissima, difficilmente rappresentabile e tutta da inventare. I risultati di un'accurata ricerca insinuano però che Dante Alighieri potrebbe essere passato per il Bosco Sacro di Bomarzo nel 1301, e avere visto i "mostri" nella selva oscura, forse i resti delle 2000 statue colossali del tempio etrusco di Volumnia, in seguito adattate a teatrali comparse del mostruoso parco voluto dal principe Vicino Orsini nel 1580. Il resto della vicenda narrata nel film è noto alla storia. Dante Alighieri arrivò infine a Viterbo, dove fu trattenuto dal papa Bonifacio VIII e mai più potè tornare a Firenze. Dopo, si sa, Dante iniziò a scrivere l'Inferno della Divina Commedia. Ma forse non a tutti è noto che il Bosco Sacro di Bomarzo misura 11 miglia in lungo e mezzo miglio in largo, come la "selva oscura"».

Plot Summary, Synopsis, Review: enthusiasmos.net: «Seven hundred years ago, just a year before the Jubilee. October 1301, on the road from Florence to Viterbo. In the mysterious region of Tuscia, a carriage crosses the Tevere valley. The shadows of irritating thoughts flicker across the face of the noble traveller, Dante Alighieri, while his servant searches for the right road. An unexpected encounter: a pilgrim raving against the Jubilee. A second encounter in Bomarzo: an innkeeper killing eels, while speaking of a sacred wood that drives men insane. A night spent consuming candles and ink in vain. And …the entrance into the Dark wood. Rather than the chronicle of a historical event, this movie is meant to be the account of a state of inspiration (the demon enthusiasmòs), that most private of conditions, so hard to represent, which has to be re-invented from the very beginning. The results of an accurate piece of research suggest, however, that Dante Alighieri could have passed through the Sacred Wood of Bomarzo in the year 1301 and seen the "monsters" in the Dark Forest, perhaps the remains of the 2000 colossal statues of the Etruscan temple of Volumnia, that were subsequently adapted to become theatrical apparitions in the park of monsters created to satisfy the whim of prince Vicino Orsini in the year 1580. The rest of the story told by the film is well known. Dante Alighieri finally arrived in Viterbo, where he was detained by Pope Bonifacio VIII, and was never able to return to Florence again. After this, as everyone knows, Dante started writing the Inferno of the Divine Comedy. But perhaps not everybody knows that the sacred wood of Bomarzo measures 11 miles by half a mile, just the same as the Dante's Dark Forest».
