«Carlo Ninchi plays Count Ugolino of Ghirardesca, a wealthy and influential Italian nobleman. While he believes himself friend of Archbishop Ruggieri (Peter Trent), the latter devises a scheme by which the Count will be ruined. By dispatching a false message, Ruggieri succeeds in getting Ugolino accused of treachery by the Republic. Unable to clear himself of the charges, he and his sons are condemned to die of hunger».
