Trama e commenti: ultimavisione.wordpress.com: «Il primo Macbeth cinematografico risale al 1908, l’ultimo è di quest’anno, e in mezzo una pletora di versioni, tra le altre quella di Orson Welles o la giapponizzata di Kurosawa, giusto per dire che non è propriamente un’opera sconosciuta. Volendomi concentrare principalmente sul testo e non su regia e interpretazione, ho optato per qualcosa con prerequisiti del tipo essere prodotto nella natia Inghilterra e con un profilo basso ma tutt’altro che scadente. Viene fuori così un Macbeth televisivo marchiato BBC poco distante da quello teatrale, interpretato da shakespeariani d’esperienza, con un doppiaggio notevole e col testo curato da Agostino Lombardo, uno dei massimi esperti italiani in materia. Didattica pura quindi e così è da intendersi seppur senza rinunciare alla qualità e senza l’incedere della noia. Macbeth è Macbeth, che altro serve aggiungere su un’opera del Bardo in circolazione da quattrocento anni. La regia non è male nei suoi fondali molto finti, nel ritmo sempre un filino blando e nei colori smorti morto british e chi ha esperienza o memoria dei telefilm di quel periodo sa esattamente di cosa sto parlando. Come si diceva l’enfasi interpretativa è da teatro ma con moderazione, il che nel contesto non guasta anzi ne accresce il fascino. I due protagonisti, Macbeth e signora sono rispettivamente il superbo Nicol Williamson che mi piace ricordare nel ruolo di Little John nel toccante Robin e Marian ma ancor più come Merlino nell’immortale Excalibur di Boorman, e la brava Jane Lapotaire che confesso a me sconosciuta sino ad oggi, ma maligna quanto basta per essere un’eccellente Lady Macbeth. Pochi fronzoli, praticamente un videolibro e se la parola "didattica" non spaventa, allora l’opera è servita» (Massimiliano Scordamaglia).

However, the Thane of Cawdor has betrayed his countrymen and now captured, is to be executed. Duncan sends messengers to greet Macbeth as Thane of Cawdor in recognition of his service. Macbeth (Nicol Williamson) and Banquo (Ian Hogg) come across three witches, who predict their futures. Macbeth is to be Thane of Cawdor and eventually King, while Banquo will sire a long line of kings. Macbeth and Banquo scoff at this, but when the King's messengers catch up with them and greet Macbeth as Thane of Cawdor, Macbeth begins to believe in the prophecy of the witches. Duncan decides to stay overnight at Macbeth's castle, and egged on by Lady Macbeth (Jane Lapotaire), our reluctant hero slays Duncan in his sleep and contrives to place the blame on Duncan's bodyguards. For me, this is one of the finest of the entries in the complete Shakespeare series produced by the BBC between 1978 and 1985. Nicol Williamson is an excellent Macbeth, demonstrating the stage presence that proved elusive on film. He makes the vacillating and reluctant regicide Macbeth believable. Jane Lapotaire is also good as his ambitious wife, as is the entire cast. Some well known actors appear in small roles, such as Brenda Bruce as the First Witch and James Bolam as Porter. Macbeth is also one of Shakespeare's most accessible plays to a modern audience given the familiarity of the story. There have been many film adaptations, notably Orson Welles' 1948 version and Roman Polanski's bloody 1971 film made in the wake of his wife's murder at the hands of the Manson family. ...» (Philip Sawyer).
