Tratto dalla serie di romanzi di Susan Cooper, The dark is rising, e in particolare dal secondo, The seeker, Il risveglio delle tenebre, più che un blockbuster per bambini pare un film scritto da un bambino, privo dell'originalità di un Harry Potter, come dell'interesse dei racconti da cui è tratto.  I produttori si sono preoccupati di epurare dalla narrazione ogni rimando alla mitologia di re Artù cui Susan Cooper s'ispirava, esponendo la storia essenziale di un ragazzino alla ricerca di qualche segno che dovrebbe salvare il mondo dall'oscurità (ma guarda un po'…). Il racconto non va molto oltre, accennando appena l'ambientazione medievale, così come il fantasy gotico che dovrebbe richiamare. L'unico interesse, date le premesse, si cerca nei personaggi, che invece sono vuoti e privi di spessore (spicca il giovane protagonista, Alexander Ludwig, per nulla simpatico e dal volto ricercatamente insulso)...».

Cunningham's 2007 film follows the adventures of young protagonist Will Stanton (Alexander Ludwig), who discovers that he is an immortal being connected with an ancient struggle between good and evil.
