Ethan rimane sorpreso dalla brutalità del mondo soprannaturale e non sa se continuare le ricerche con Vanessa e Malcolm. Quest'ultimo è interessato a scoprire la natura di questi esseri e contatta dunque il dottor Victor Frankenstein, il quale desidera portare in vita un cadavere. Victor, infatti, ha segretamente generato Proteo, una creatura umana dalla mente infantile. Il dottore gli fa da padre, ma il suo bambino viene ucciso dalla Creatura, ovvero il suo "primogenito". Quest'ultimo, abbandonato da Victor alla nascita, conosce prevalentemente rabbia e odio. Intenzionato a tormentare Victor affinché egli gli crei una "compagna", l'essere trova lavoro al piccolo teatro londinese Grand Guignol. Nel frattempo Ethan conosce la prostituta Brona, che alloggia in una locanda al porto. I due diventano amici e poi amanti, ma Ethan scopre fin subito che la donna è malata di tubercolosi. Brona entra in contatto con Dorian Gray, il quale provoca nelle persone strane reazioni psicosessuali. Chandler's inclusion is a distracting mistake, the result of a pandering urge to offer American audiences a surrogate among the predominantly European actors. Hartnett's characteristically uncomfortable mannerisms (that theoretically mysterious hunch, the mumbling) do nothing to convince us of Ethan's stature as a Man with a Troubled Past.
