La storia si apre con l’annuncio della misteriosa morte di un gruppo di Clown in Romania. Una delle bare, riportate in patria a Baltimora come le altre, viene parcheggiato nel magazzino di un edificio, dove si trova anche la redazione di un giornale e dove per una infausta coincidenza Rajeeve (Max Gray Wilbur), ex cantante di un gruppo metal alla disperata ricerca di un impiego, inizia a lavorare come guardiano notturno (da qui il titolo stesso). Primo giorno piuttosto faticoso, il poverino non solo si trova ad affiancare tre singolari e ruvidi individui, ma dovrà affrontare una crisi imprevedibile. Da una parte a vessare il novellino goliardicamente ci sono i tre colleghi, delineati all’insegna dello stereotipo caricaturale, ossia Ken (Ken Arnold), ex soldato che non sa sparare con una cotta per un’avvenente giornalista, Karen (Kara Luiz), Luca (Dan DeLuca), italo-americano scurrilissimo che impreca in idioma nostrano e parla con accento marcata, e Jiggetts (Kevin Jiggetts), afroamericano di religione giudaica. Dall’altra, l’ambientazione per il nuovo arrivato è resa decisamente più complessa dal risveglio di uno dei suddetti pagliacci, ovviamente un nosferatu, che comincia immediatamente dopo mordere tutti quelli in cui si imbatte, creando un’epidemia vampirica alla velocità della luce. ...» (Sabrina Crivelli).

His body is shipped back to his hometown of Baltimore, Maryland and stored in a warehouse where our main protagonists, a group of night watchmen, are working. While they are (as usual) playing cards, eating donuts, stealing their co-workers’ pizza orders and using their cameras to spy on office hottie Karen (Kara Luiz), their team leader Ken (Ken Arnold) spots some mysterious happenings on their monitors. As he rallies the unenthusiastic troops into action, they soon discover that their colleagues working late have started to catch the vampirism bug. The Night Watchmen is a rather fun, action-packed horror comedy with likeable characters, plentiful splatter and a good deal of wit. Technically the vampires of the film feel more like a horde of ravenous zombies than the wily, manipulative bloodsuckers that Dracula and company are traditionally portrayed as. It’s also marred a little by some repetitious gags (the fact that these vampires pass wind after they have been staked soon gets old) plus some pretty bad CGI at the end. Even so, this is definitely a livelier and more entertaining film than the previous two new feature-length films exhibited at the festival (The Evil Within and Without Name).
