Per chi non lo sapesse o per chi ne volesse sapere di più, il Southern Gothic è un genere letterario che ovviamente nasce dal gotico e ne ha le caratteristiche principali, cioè racconti di fatti bizzarri, oscuri e/o occulti ma con la sostanziale differenza che, scendendo più a fondo della semplice creazione del brivido, analizza il substrato socioculturale dell'America del sud. Tra i suoi esponenti più noti ci sono Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams e William Faulkner. Questo per dire che almeno nel titolo il film di Mark Young ha un'accattivante derivazione. La trama non è da meno. Racconta di Hazel Fortune, un disperato alcolizzato perseguitato dalla morte della figlia che lavora in uno squallido strip bar nella cittadina di Redemption (nel Sud degli States). Hazel ha deciso di lasciarsi andare se non fosse che il senso di colpa lo porta a voler salvare la piccola Hope da un folle predicatore, Enoch Pitt, che vuole portare avanti una folle crociata. Nel cast spiacca William Forsythe (The Devil's Rejects) ma ci sono anche Yul Vasquez (La Guerra dei Mondi, Traffic) e Nicole DuPort».
