La serie narrava le vicende di un vampiro di Los Angeles, che lavorava come investigatore privato. Il pilot fu un disastro, ma il progetto fu rimesso in carreggiata quando la CBS chiamò David Greenwalt, autore di Buffy e co-creatore di Angel. Greenwalt riscrisse il copione e confermò solo il protagonista fra i quattro attori principali. Il personaggio di Mick St. John interpretato da Alex O' Loughlin, già visto in The Shield, cambiò radicalmente, così come il personaggio di Josef Konstan, all'inizio pensato come un anziano vampiro, amico e mentore di Mick. Greenwalt, purtroppo lasciò la serie, per problemi di salute, ma il progetto fu portato avanti dal produttore Joel Silver, che tra i suoi successi conta Matrix, V per Vendetta, Veronica Mars ed Arma Letale. Lo show cambiò titolo col nome di Moonlight ed il pilot ebbe uno discreto successo. La serie di sedici episodi, narra le vicende del vampiro Mick St. John, trasformato in una creatura della notte durante la prima notte di nozze nel 1952, dalla moglie Coraline, una vampira di circa 300 anni, interpretata da Shannyn Sossamon, interprete di Le regole dell’attrazione. Sono passati più di cinquant'anni e Mick è diventato un investigatore privato a Los Angeles, che cerca di aiutare gli essere umani utilizzando i suoi poteri. Durante le indagini per dei casi di omicidi commessi da vampiri, Mick incontra un internet reporter, Beth, interpretata da Sophia Myles ... I due hanno un passato in comune, di cui solo il vampiro ha memoria. Beth, ventidue anni prima, era stata rapita da Coraline e Mick per salvarla aveva ucciso la moglie dando a fuoco la casa. Alex O'Loughlin starred as LA private detective Mick St. John, who'd become an "undead" vampire way back in 1947 thanks to his fang-bearing former wife Coralyn (Shannyn Sossamon. Though obliged to drink blood and avoid sunlight to survive (luckily he was impervious to such usual vampire repellants as wooden stakes and garlic), Mick made the best of a bad situation by taking a job that allow him to work nights and to spend his days sleeping in a freezer; and, good-hearted soul that he was, Mick sidestepped the embarrassing necessity of killing people for their blood by forming a strong friendship with morgue attendant Guillermo (Jacob Vargas), who provided him with an endless supply of fresh corpses. Against his better judgment, Mick fell in love with a mortal, intrepid girl reporter Beth Turner (Sophia Myles), who worked for the Buzzwire news service and who frequently accompanied Mick during his investigations. Rounding out the regular characters were Mick's mentor and best friend Josef (Jason Dohring), a remarkably well-preserved 400 year old vampire who supported his luxurious lifestyle as a professional fund trader, and who lacked Mick's compassion for human beings but was willing to avoid biting necks when Beth was around; and police lieutenant Carl Davis (Brian White), who by default was the only entirely normal character on the show.
