Trama e commenti: dvdaddicted.it: «Bao-ling (Chen Szu-Chia) lavora da un parrucchiere. Una sera arriva uno strano signore come cliente. Questo si invaghisce di Bao-ling e quando lei viene buttata a terra per colpa di una macchina, il signore la aiuta e la invita nel suo negozio di oculistica per dargli delle lenti a contatto essendo i suoi occhiali rotti durante la caduta. Fino qua tutto bene, fino a che Bao-ling scopre che le lenti acquistate dal signore sono stregate.. lui è un vampiro e con l’aiuto della povera e costretta Bao-ling mieterà vittime le amiche dell’indifesa ragazza. Ebbene sì, questa volta il fantasma/vampiro possiederà la ragazza in questione tramite delle lenti a contatto maledette. La storia non è brutta anzi, parecchio innovativa per il tempo (si parla sempre di inizio anni ’70) però il film ci ha deluso. Non ricordiamo esattamente cosa ci aveva colpito dal trailer ma il film che ci siamo ritrovati è stato abbastanza noioso. Una scena molto carina è quando Bao-ling va a lavarsi le mani ed ad un tratto escono delle mani da morto dall’acqua. Lei scappa si gira e vede un morto. Un’altra scena particolarmente d’effetto è quando andando a casa passa davanti ad un edificio crollato per colpa di un tifone molto tempo prima, e lei comincia a vedere i morti sotto le macerie che chiedono aiuto. Purtroppo il resto del film non è all’altezza di queste scene. Le apparizioni del fantasma non sono nulla di che, e passando sopra al makeup veramente scarso e finto (cmq sia niente di negativo guardando gli anni delle pellicola), non c’è tensione. Forse siamo noi che siamo abituati e quando uscì il film all’epoca sicuramente l’impatto fu diverso ma per noi è stato piatto. Gli attori sono tutti, ovviamente, della scuderia Shaw Brothers. La principale protagonista Szu Chia Chen ha fatto l’esordio proprio con questo film e possiamo dire che se l’è cavata egregiamente nel ruolo della ragazza infestata dal fantasma. Purtroppo a noi questo film, togliendo le due scene citate in precedenza e un po’ il finale, non è che ci sia piaciuto granchè. Ammettiamo che avevamo aspettative molto alte ma non sono state soddisfatte manco un po’. Lo consigliamo? Solo se vi interessa il genere e una lancia a suo favore: è uno dei primi film dove un oggetto è infestato».

However it is in Eastern cinema where the two are often confused with the word ghost being almost a catchall, that sometimes means vampire and at other times what we would more traditionally call a ghost. Sometimes this is because of translation as the word Guǐ means ghost but is also found in the kanji for vampire (which is suck blood ghost). In this case, we have a very early example of a Hong Kong vampire movie in which there does seem to be a purposeful confusion between a corporeal undead entity and a spirit based one. In this the more familiar figure of the kyonsi is absolutely absent but some familiar tropes remain in the movie. What is also interesting is how this plays with a modern contrivance and places it within the world of the supernatural. A man, Shi Jong-Jie (Si Wai), enters a barbershop looking to have a manicure done. He is led into the shop but notices that there are mirrors on both sides of the shop (except for the first seat) and aims to sit there. The owner notices that he didn’t seem to reflect in one mirror but dismisses the notion and, as we shall see, mirrors play a role later in the film. The beautician told to work with him needs to leave and so she asks Wang Bao-Ling (Chan Si-Gaai) to deal with him. As she works he discovers that she lives alone. ...».
