Plot Summary, Synopsis, Review: IMDb - flixster.com - myspace.com - emeraldage.net: «The Vampires of Zanzibar is an independent movie by director John Birmingham. It is the fifith film directed by the talented Mr. Birmingham. Set in Zanzibar, VA., the movie follows Paul (Doug Dressler) as he battles vampires from taking over the world. Paul (Dressler) is a student that is haunted by his brother’s disappearence. Paul is also on a daily dose of medicine that is given to him by his father. To help take things off his mind Paul goes to the skate park where he meets Mabus (Birmingham) and his crew (all of whom are vampires). Mabus looks familiar to Paul but he doesn’t know why. After a brief encounter with Mabus Paul heads off to school. At school you meet Rakeed (Birmingham) and his thugged out friend. You are also treated to the “Sexy Mrs. Leroy” song by Jacob (Bjarni Gautar). What makes this song fun is Jacob sings it death metal style. Jacob and his two gay friends are bullied and attacked by Rakeed and his friend. Paul skates by and becomes Rakeed’s next target. While in the lunch room Rakeed slipps Paul enough acid to cause an elephant to trip. Once in Mrs. Leroy’s (Evyh Cerhus) class Paul vamps out and attacks her. Laney (Lauren Susan) helps Paul out and gets him home. Mabus had told Paul if he ever needed anything to let him know. When Sheriff Bush (Connie Watkins) comes looking for Paul he seeks out Mabus for help. Mrs. Leroy who is now a vampire begins converting everyone so she can spread Paul’s blood. Paul who along with Laney, and his father (Robin Watkins) set out to stop her. Paul learns about the medicine his father has been giving him and what really happened to his brother. Paul and company must not only battle Mrs. Leory and her vampire followers, but Mabus and his. The Vampires of Zanzibar has several moments that are very funny and crude at the same time. Birmingham does a good job with the special effects in this movie by keeping them simple. There are some green screen moments but they are done well. The story at first is a little confusing, but is explained and becomes easier to follow. The songs are funny and range from metal to rap to country. JackAss and Viva La Bam stars Brandon Dicamillo and Chris Raab “Himself” also turn in funny performances. One of the strengths of this movie was the over the top sound effects at the beginning. They would enhance the scenes and added to the crude humor. As the movie goes on they go away, which is a shame. Some of the dialog is muffled. The parts that contain voice overs don’t mesh well. They sound as if they are in a box and don’t blend with the scene. I also felt that some of the scenes seemed choppy towards the end. Overall, The Vampires of Zanzibar is a fun independent movie. It has funny songs, good special effects, and provides some good laughs. Definately worth a watch!».
