La crisi economica ha spinto molti giapponesi ad emigrare sul continente asiatico. A dispetto del fatto che ci siano parecchie sparatorie e che sia presente la figura del vampiro, tema portante dell’intera pellicola è l’amicizia. Sentimento, in questo caso, venato anche da un sottotesto omoerotico, mai esplicitato del tutto, ma chiaramente suggerito (in ossequio al successo delle produzioni fumettistiche e animate per ragazze del genere yaoi e shonen ai). Accanto all’amicizia, la malinconia. Solitudine e violenza impediscono una vita felice a tutti i personaggi (compreso il vampiro, il più emarginato tra gli emarginati), anche nei momenti migliori un senso di ineluttabile decadimento fa presagire i più nefasti sviluppi. Girato con perizia da uno staff preparato e recitato incredibilmente bene dai due improvvisati cantanti/attori, Moon Child alterna ombre e luci. E non solo quelle della notte e del giorno, alle cui leggi deve sottostare Kei!Accanto ad una buona produzione generale ed a qualche momento veramente riuscito, bisogna sottolineare la mancanza di coesione generale, dovuta sia a carenze di sceneggiatura, sia alla scelta di spezzettare la vicenda nell’arco degli anni, con salti temporali anche consistenti. Un ottimo film per due orette di divertimento leggere leggere, senza troppe pretese».

I was really surprised when I first watched MoonChild. Usually I am not too keen on watching Japanese movies (or Asian films in general), not because they are of poor quality ~ and hereby I am outing myself - most of the time I just don't get them. MoonChild tore all my prejudices to bits and pieces ~ it is a wonderful movie, with great actors who prove that they are not only able to sing but also to act, stunningly choreographed gun fights, and last but not least a profound plot. Admitted that the plot neither boasts any great new ideas nor does it have a different approach to Vampires that we haven't seen before a million times ~ but what we got works and is very, very well executed. The story about 2 friends passing through life, losing each other and finally meeting again to discover that they are forever bound together is timeless and spiced up with John Woo'ish gun fights that are just visually impressive. You just have to see yourself to believe! Trust me, they are that good! One element in the film that can be a little bit awkward is the humor. MoonChild does not only boast great fight scenes, it also has a lot of that weird-yet-funny Japanese slapstick humor. Sometimes the transition from serious, blood drenched gun fights to goofy humor is a little too fast for me - but that is just a tiny nitpick. Overall the movie is a great one to watch.
