Trama e commenti: isole.ecn.org - hkx.it: «Jeff Lau sin dagli esordi punta subito al genere horror, terreno prediletto, come dimostrerà con le opere successive: con The Haunted Cop Shop elabora una complicata sarabanda che mescola apparentemente alla rinfusa umori e sensazioni, e che sa distillare emozioni forti. Nel cinema di Lau non c'è possibilità per una via di mezzo, tutto è lecito, niente è improbabile. La commistione di generi non è una novità, soprattutto nel cinema della paura (Encounter of the Spooky Kind, The Dead and the Deadly), ma il modo in cui opera la regia è chirurgico: le ferite aperte, in alcuni casi colpi d'accetta più che di bisturi, vanno riempite con ogni ingrediente possibile. Deriva in tal modo una concorrenza di elementi diversi e antitetici: sangue e risate, poliziotti e santoni, vampiri e demenzialità scatologica. Nulla è proibito, con il chiaro scopo di confezionare un caleidoscopio estetico e contenutistico che non conosca limiti. Una lezione programmatica che fa del brutto e del basso il suo orgoglio, eleggendo la bêtise a stendardo di battaglia. La storia è davvero banale: due poliziotti imbranati, Macky Kin e Chiu Man, devono vedersela, spalleggiati ora da un commissario, ora da un acchiappafantasmi, ora da una donna poliziotto, con il cadavere di un generale giapponese reincarnatosi dopo essersi suicidato cinquant'anni prima. Per evitare di essere morsi, ma anche di essere licenziati, i due amici devono riuscire a sconfiggere il nemico e contemporaneamente a convincere gli attoniti colleghi dell'effettiva esistenza del mondo soprannaturale. La prima componente che provvede a rendere irresistibile The Haunted Cop Shop è proprio il doppio livello di conoscenza, per cui anche lo spettatore è chiamato a giocare la sua parte: da un lato infatti abbiamo i due protagonisti, e il pubblico con loro, che hanno assistito ad alcuni eventi inspiegabili (la morte di un criminale, trasformato in cenere dalla luce del sole); dall'altro il resto del mondo, incredulo e pronto a etichettare come folle chiunque affermi la presenza di spettri e vampiri. ...».

Much-hated police chief Shun (Woo Fung) receives a visit one day from an ex-officer, who is now a monk. He has come to worn his former boss that the station (which used to be a bar and the site where a group of Japanese soldiers committed suicide at the end of World War II) will soon be overrun by the undead during the upcoming Festival of Hungry Ghosts, unless precautions are taken, a threat Shun doesn't take seriously. Later that evening, bumbling cops Macky Kim (Jacky Cheung Hok-yau) and Chiu Man (Ricky Hui Koon-ying) have fun tormenting thief Sneaky Ming (Billy Lau Nam-kwong), whom they get to confess in a novel fashion. Locked away in his cell for the night, Ming finds himself invited out to a ritzy bar and a round of mahjong. What he doesn't realize is that his three opponents are spirits and he has inadvertently wagered his life. Vampirized by their leader, General Issey (a bloodsucker of the Western variety, sporting the requisite Bela Lugosi-style cape), Ming tries to make Macky and Chiu believe that he is no longer of this earth but the two remain unconvinced -- until Ming gets hit with a ray of sunshine and promptly disintegrates into a pile of ashes.
