«Il re Guglielmo e la regina Uberta desiderano
che i rispettivi figli Odette e Derek convolino un giorno a giuste nozze. La
costrizione di passare le estati insieme a giocare li rende sempre più ostili
l'uno all'altra, ma raggiunta la maggiore età si accorgono che il matrimonio non
è poi una cosa tanto malvagia. Ma alla vigilia delle nozze l'incauto Derek
afferma di voler Odette solo per la sua bellezza, e la fanciulla si allontana,
delusa. Ma il mago Rothbarth, da sempre nemico del re, che lo ha da tempo
esiliato dal suo regno, cattura Odette e uccide il padre, le cui ultime parole
"Non è ciò che sembra", vengono raccolte dal sopraggiunto Derek. Portatala nel
suo castello sul lago, il mago propone ad Odette di regnare con lei sul regno
paterno, ma ella rifiuta sdegnata. Lui allora le lancia un incantesimo che la
trasforma in cigno, salvo che nelle notti di luna, quando potrà riassumere forma
umana. Consolazione nella solitudine sono per lei un ranocchio francofono, Jean
Bob, una tartaruga d'acqua, detta Freccia, e un pulcinella di mare, Puffin, che
Odette ha raccolto ferito e ha curato. Derek pensa sempre a lei e va alla caccia
dell'enorme animale che, crede, ha rapito la principessa. Frattanto la regina
organizza una festa in cui mostrerà al figlio diverse principesse. Ma Derek,
cacciando Odette come cigno, la segue sul lago e la vede trasformarsi. Le chiede
allora di comparire alla festa, dove, giurandole eterno amore, la libererà dal
maleficio. Ma la sera della festa è luna nuova, e per maggior sicurezza il mago
imprigiona il cigno. Jean Bob, Freccia e Puffin liberano però la principessa che
si reca al castello, dove costei vede con dolore che la serva del mago,
trasformata in Odette, diviene l'oggetto dell'appassionata dichiarazione di
Derek, decretando il trionfo del malvagio rivale. Ma Derek si batte con il
mostro in cui Rothbarth si trasforma. Quasi allo stremo, riesce però a
trafiggerlo con una freccia e a salvare l'amato bene con cui convola a giuste
nozze».

fall in love and marry, so that the kingdoms of the two will be united. As

each other. But one night things take a bad turn when Derek unintentionally

kingdom when he plotted against the king. In the form of a beast, Rothbart
