«Tra i primi lungometraggi d'animazione europei. Nel 1911 la Reiniger aveva
infatti prodotto una ¨silhouette¨ rudimentale, una figura nera che si muoveva su
uno sfondo bianco, intitolata Das tapfere Schneiderlein versucht Mus (Il
piccolo sarto coraggioso assaggia la marmellata), che rappresentò un vero e
proprio esperimento all'interno del cinema d'avanguardia. "Ci sono molte
differenze tra il mio modo di animare i personaggi e quello delle ombre cinesi -
osservava Lotte Reiniger - Loro muovono le ombre in senso ondulatorio, mentre io
le muovo di piatto, sfruttando lo snodo del bacino per articolare i movimenti.
Varia anche l'illuminazione: la loro è frontale, la mia giunge dall'alto"».

«A wicked sorcerer
offers the caliph a magic flying horse. In exchange he wants the hand of
Dinarsade, the caliph's daughter. Prince Achmed is incensed by this idea and
persuades his father to reject it. So the sorcerer retaliates by casting a spell
which lures Prince Achmed to mount the horse and fly off. This is the beginning
of a long adventurous journey. While travelling Achmed averts disaster, falls in
love with the Princess Pari Banu on the enchanted island of Wak Wak and
encounters Aladdin in China. After all he wins the Princess´ heart and takes her
back to his father's palace. "This was the world's first animated feature. Lotte
Reiniger used a freehand scissors technique to design her protagonists, then
joined the parts of each body with wire hinges and arranged them beneath a
camera on a glass table lit from below. Their position was only slightly
modified between each exposure. To design the background she used transparent
layers of greaseproof paper and created landscapes, cities and oriental
interieurs».
