Sharp, cunning, likeable but basically out for himself, he escapes from the soldiers and flees to Venice, where he falls for a beautiful gypsy girl. When she's arrested for witchcraft by the Inquisition, he jumps on a ship bound for Spain. In Seville, he finds a job making fancy fireworks, an Italian specialty. Columbus has just discovered the New World and Queen Isabella, greedy for gold, orders a fleet to sail for Florida and find it. Johan once again jumps on board a ship without knowing where he's going. The crew tosses him below deck to tend pigs with the friendly overweight giant "Tripletummy." When a fearsome tempest comes up off the Florida coast, they are shipwrecked together. A tribe of Seminole Indians finds them, initially intending to eat them. Later they elect Johan their shaman-leader when his Old World knowledge accurately predicts a hurricane and his ability to cauterize and sew up wounds saves the tribal chief's life...».
