Vittime della gelosia di un fidanzato abbandonato e dell'egoismo del padre dell'eroina, vanno incontro anche loro a una fine tragica. L'idea di partenza è di Cayatte (1909-89), ma sceneggiatura e dialoghi sono di Jacques Prévert. Il film appartiene a lui più che al regista: la continuità tematica con i film scritti da Prévert per Carné (Il porto delle nebbie, Alba tragica, ecc.) è evidente. Non quella stilistica, sfortunatamente. All'attivo della regia, comunque, è la direzione degli attori tra cui la sedicenne A. Aimée al suo secondo film e il ventiseienne S. Reggiani che sono ammirevoli...».

However, lacking the historical perspective of the earlier film, Cayatte's handling of the story of two stand-ins for the stars of a film version of Romeo and Juliet, who slowly become the roles they play, quickly degenerates into a simple tale of young love, despite beautiful sets and atmospheric camerawork. Though set in Italy, with the Fascist past contributing to the troubles of the star-crossed lovers, it is interesting in retrospect as an indication of the mood of the post-war, pre-New Wave French cinema».
