Il giovane Na-mi scappa dal suo villaggio ormai distrutto per cercare sua sorella e la sua fidanzata Su-koon, che avrebbe dovuto sposare proprio il giorno dell’attacco, fatte prigioniere dal nemico. Viene però rintracciato ed inseguito da Jushinta, guerriero Chung, e dai suoi soldati, che tentano di fermarlo. Na-mi ha solo un giorno per salvare sua sorella prima che venga resa schiava, ma quando finalmente la trova Jushinta lo raggiunge, ingaggiando con lui una sanguinosa battaglia. Kim han-min torna alle ambientazioni che avevano contraddistinto il suo esordio Paradise murdered, inconsueto thriller in costume presentato al Florence Korea Film Fest in una passata edizione, e si rituffa quindi nel film d’epoca e nell’era Chosun. Permangono retaggi thriller sin a partire dall’incipit, ma l’atmosfera è quella tipica e classica del film in costume. L’epica del combattimento, la maestra nell’uso delle armi, tutti ingredienti tipici del film coreano legato all’epopea della nascita della nazione, si avvicendano perfettamente creando un mix ben dosato d’azione e passione. L’eroe romantico, stoico, mosso dai più sani principi affettivi e di difesa della patria violata è ancora una volta al centro, fulcro attorno al quale si muovono le vicende narrate ed anelano fanciulle in pericolo. Le donne sono, qui come sempre secondo la liturgia prestabilita di questo film di genere obiettivo e stimolo all’azione, e l’attante quindi diventa tale perchè mosso dall’ideale lirico e sentimentale che egli stesso è chiamato a ricoprire. Kim non fa difetto in questo senso, e presenta un film classico, dall’ottima fotografia, dagli splendidi costumi e dalla rappresentazione puntuale e rigorosa» (Gabriella Cerbai).

The film was directed by Kim Han Min, previously responsible for the offbeat mystery Paradise Murdered, and attempts to offer something a little different to the usual historical epics by notching up the tension and aiming for more of a focus on action. ... The film kicks off in the early 17th century with a young boy called Nam Yi and his sister Ja In fleeing for their lives when their father is accused of being a traitor and killed. Leaping forward some years to 1636, the two have been raised by a friend of the family, Nam Yi (Park Hae Il) grown to be a hunter and skilled archer, highly protective of Ja In. Unfortunately, as the second Manchurian invasion of Korea begins, on her the eve of her wedding to her childhood sweetheart (Kim Moo Yeol, Romantic Heaven) their village is massacred by the evil Prince Dorgon (Park Ki Woong, My Tutor Friend 2), and she and many of the other inhabitants are captured as slaves. Ignoring the law that bans citizens from crossing border into enemy territory, Nam Yi heads off to rescue her, pursued by Dorgon’s head archer (Ryu Seung Ryong) and his team of crack bowmen. It doesn’t take long to realise that War of the Arrows is an action film first and a historical drama a very far second, Kim Han Min making this clear from the heart pounding opening, the young children being chased by vicious dogs before being saved at the last second by a hail of arrows.
