Il generale Yang, tra gli uomini più fidati dell'imperatore, viene schierato in prima linea ma finisce vittima di un'imboscata ed è costretto, insieme ai suoi pochi soldati sopravvissuti, a rifugiarsi in un fortino isolato. Presentato all'ultima edizione del Far East Film Festival di Udine, Saving General Yang segna il ritorno dietro la macchina da presa, a sette anni dal riuscito Fearless con Jet Li, del regista Ronny Yu (Freddie vs. Jason, La sposa di Chucky in terra americana) che per l'occasione sceglie di adattare sul grande schermo una delle più famose e leggendarie imprese della storia cinese, già portata diverse sulle volte al cinema in versioni più o meno romanzate. Un classico dell'epica nazionale che il cineasta hongkonghese ritrae con una produzione spettacolare e un cast di divi-sex symbol dell'estremo oriente tra i quali Adam Cheng, Ekin Cheng, Wu Chun, Raymond Lam. Operazione riuscita poiché Saving General Yang (che già dal titolo riporta alla mente la missione raccontata da Spielberg ne Salvate il soldato Ryan) concentra nei suoi cento minuti un buon mix di avventura ed imprese eroiche, non disdegnando alcuni momenti più introspettivi e poetici che lasciano con il fiato sospeso sino agli ultimi secondi, con diversi colpi di scena che non fanno che aumentare a dismisura il sottotesto epico presente nel racconto. Se si può, ad esser pignoli, denotare una non sempre esaustiva profondità nella caratterizzazione dei sette fratelli, non si può al contempo negare che la carica emozionale raggiunta da certe sequenze arrivi a rivaleggiare con i capisaldi del genere, avvantaggiata da un'ottima e convincente realizzazione delle coreografie nei combattimenti che si colloca in un mix tra il soave stile da wuxiapian e una violenza più cruda e realistica. Gli effetti speciali, fortunatamente limitati a poche scene, non sono propriamente esaltanti, ma ciò che conta realmente qui è la necessità del combattimento, nel cozzare delle spade o nel sibilo delle frecce, affidando ad ognuno dei sette protagonisti un particolare stile e/o arma nel quale eccelle per abilità rispetto ai fratelli, garantendo in tal modo anche una certa varietà negli scontri. Tra romanticismo e leggenda, Ronny Yu firma un'opera certamente non perfetta ma dove vi è tanto cuore che pulsa vibrante nelle eroiche gesta della famiglia Yang. ...» (Maurizio Encari).

The film was selected as part of the 2013 Hong Kong International Film Festival. It is early Northern Song dynasty, AD 986, in Northeastern China. The film starts as Yang Ye (Adam Cheng), the leader of the Yang Clan and General for Song, executes 30 whiplashes to his youngest and second youngest child. They participated in a kung fu tournament which caused the death of a rival clan's son. The following morning, the two clan leaders meet with the emperor about the issue when the signaling stations (used for warning an oncoming invasion by their neighboring country) ignites. It was the Khitan army invading, hoping to take its revenge on Yang Clan for a past massacre that killed the former Khitan general. It was noted that the leader of the oncoming Khitan army is led by the son of the former Khitan general. Due to politics and the recent death of rival clan's son, the rival clan leader is awarded with 50,000 troops to welcome the Khitan army. As punishment, General Yang is awarded to lead the charge and be the scout for Song Dynasty. When the two armies meet, the lack of leadership by the rival clan leader causes chaos among the Song army as Khitan takes a decisive victory. All the while, General Yang is trapped behind enemy lines as the retreat horn sounds. The chaos causes General Yang Ye to be trapped in an abandoned town in front of Wolf Mountain, as the Khitan army surrounds the town, allowing no one to leave. Song's army, now led by the clan rival, refuses to help and rescue Yang Ye (assumed to be politics again among the clan rivals). This leaves Yang Ye's wife devestated as she sends her seven sons to rescue him. It is later revealed that this is exactly what the Khitan general wanted, and the seven sons fall into their deadly trap. ...».
