le precedenti co-direzioni con Carlos Saldanha (L’era glaciale e
Robots), Chris Wedge ritorna nelle sale con Epic - Il mondo segreto,
un titolo che a ben pensare non rende giustizia all’ultima animazione dei Blue
Sky Studios. E non certo perché in quell’ora e mezzo manchi l’avventura, ma
perché nell’economia generale del film la grande battaglia tra buoni e cattivi è
l’aspetto meno travolgente per un cinema che di Signori del Male molto più
appariscenti del simil-ratto Mandrake ne ha già visti tanti, per non parlare di
battaglie tra mondi ben più efferate di quella tra i Leafmen e i Bogani. Questi
spiriti, invisibili agli occhi umani, animano la foresta e incarnano i principi
di vita e di morte in lotta perenne. Topos (in salsa ambientalista) a parte,
l’originalità di Epic sta nella delicatezza con cui il regista affronta
il contrasto generazionale che accomuna Mary Katherine e Nod, giovani
incoscienti e ribelli, evitando i facili cliché del caso. Lo stesso rapporto tra
la giovane protagonista e il padre inventore riesce a far presa, grazie ad un
incipit che chiarisce immediatamente quanta intuizione ci sia dietro quelle
strampalate teorie pseudo-scientifiche e annuncia fin da subito il lieto
risvolto del rapporto familiare. Per quanto il tratteggio dello stravagante
scienziato rimandi a
La Bella e la Bestia, gli strepitosi lumaconi Mub e Grub
echeggino addirittura Timon e Pumbaa del Re Leone (ma garantiscono quel
tocco ironico degno di ogni duo che si rispetti) e l’eccentrico Nim Galuu sia un
incrocio tra il Brucaliffo di Alice nel Paese della Meraviglie e il Genio
di
Aladdin, questi remake non sviliscono la narrazione che, al
contrario, si sviluppa armoniosamente alternando scontri e peripezie. Ma è
proprio quando Wedge si emancipa dal “complesso edipico disneyano” che ci regala
i momenti di maggiore intensità del film. Grazie al rimpicciolimento di Mary
Katherine il regista trova il modo per farci entrare nella sua Wonderland: una
foresta graficamente lussureggiante ed esaltata dal 3D, abitata da verdi spiriti
fatati che cavalcano colibrì e che popolano alberi e foglie dai colori
sgargianti. Con questa grande festa cromatica il regista concilia bene le
esigenze dei più piccoli in cerca di appassionanti avventure e quelle di un
pubblico adulto a cui regala una storia intimistica senza avvelenarla con banali

«Epic is the latest animation movie from Blue Sky Studios. They are the same
studios that brought us the amazing Ice Age Films and colorful Rio. Being
directed by the co-founder of Blue Sky, Chris Wedge, it is a story of a teenager
M.K. (voice over by Amanda Seyfried) who is enforced to move in with her father
who is estranged and eccentric. Professor Bomba (voice over by Jason Sudeikis)
is obsessed with an unseen race of tiny people who supposedly live in the woods.
All this happens due to the death of the mother of M.K. What follows in Epic
is bluntly the same that one might expect. M.K loses interest in her father. HE
is always busy with his work and thus, she is left alone. To kill that, she
wanders off in the woods where she accidentally comes across the world of tiny
people. The dying queen of the forest (voice over by Beyoncé) hands over the
heart of forest to her. Shocked from the fact that her father was right, she
embarks on a journey with Leafmen leader Ronin (voice over by Colin Farrell) and
his annoying partner Nod to save the forest from the evil Boggans and then
return back home. The movie Epic consists of quite many plot holes. Fore
mostly, we do not have any idea about the Bolligans. All we know is that they
want to destroy the forest. But why? This part is not built at all. Every aspect
of scrip is covered extremely well with the stunning graphics that will allure
you and the picturesque landscapes that are dazzling. Well that was obviously
expected and the studio has stood right on our expectations. But that is not all
what we wanted. There is practically no character development in the animated
movie Epic. It is a pity that the movie tries to rely on just the
aesthetics and creating a spectacular world never seen before. M.K. as a
character is the best of all. She is likeable but that doesn’t complete the
movie. Every other character that we come across is more of a dull and lifeless
thing with humorless dialogues. Humor can be found here and there in the movie
but not in the entirety. At a runtime of 102 minutes, Epic is short but
still feels stretchy at many places. Everything is wide open since the beginning
and the movie walks on a plain path with no twist and turns. No doubt the 3D
effects are fabulous and the virtual world that they have created is also
fantastic. But that is the only Epic thing about this animated movie».
