È l’ultimo, quasi completamente folle, membro della setta Wittwiccan di cui fa parte Stephen Hawking e in passato gente del calibro di Shakespeare e Mozart. Lo sapevate che i Transformers erano un passo dietro i Cavalieri della Tavola Rotonda nel V secolo d.C.? Eravate a conoscenza del fatto che durante la II Guerra Mondiale gli Autobot erano dalla parte degli Alleati? Conoscevate la storia… dell’orologio che uccise Hitler (la più misteriosa e intrigante del film perché volutamente non svelata)? Posseduto da non pochi momenti di demenza senile Sir Edmund Burton è quello impegnato nello spiegone del film. Capirai… sarebbe come chiedere a Rocket Raccoon di condurre lezioni di gestione della rabbia. Nel poco decodificabile resoconto di Sir Burton, affiancato da un maggiordomo robot bipolare di nome Corgan preso subito in giro nel film perché pare la copia più sociopatica di C3PO, scopriamo che: 1) la professoressa di Oxford Viviane Wembly (Laura Haddock già apprezzata come madre morente di Peter Quill in arte Star-Lord) è la discendente del mago Merlino e ha un ruolo chiave nel recupero di un bastone magico in grado di evitare la collisione di Cybertron con il pianeta Terra 2) l’inventore senza brevetti texano Cade Yeager (ancora una grande prova da Average Joe simpatico oltre la media da parte di Mark Wahlberg) è il degno successore dei Cavalieri di Artù in quanto probo e degno di valore. Uno yankee come ultima risorsa per la Corte di Re Artù? Ebbene sì. Sai che soddisfazione per colore che cacciarono a calci nel sedere gli inglesi via dal loro paese alla fine del XVIII Secolo? Viviane e Cade sono molto diversi ma tra loro nascerà ben presto una divertente relazione di amore-odio condita da una evidente attrazione fisica reciproca cosa che, purtroppo, non abbiamo avuto il piacere di vedere e sentire tra Annabelle Wallis e Tom Cruise ne La Mummia di Kurtzman. A questa trama principale aggiungete che: Cybertron sta entrando in collisione con la Terra, Megatron vuole distruggere tutto e coglie l’occasione per farlo quando viene contattato dai militari del TRF per un doppio gioco non condotto in modo particolarmente intelligente, l’ex capo del Settore 7 Simmons (John Turturro) è bloccato a Cuba dove non gli mettono il ghiaccio nel mojito e Optimus Prime è stato sedotto e abbindolato dalla fluttuante divinità aliena Quintessa, la quale l’ha prima plagiato e poi trasformato nella brutta copia di sé ovvero Nemesis Prime. ...» (Francesco Alò).

But — surprise — the fifth Transformers movie, The Last Knight, is far from the worst in this continuing experiment in noisy nonsense based on Hasbro toys. That is thanks largely to two words: Anthony Hopkins. What Mr. Hopkins, a knighted Emmy and Oscar winner, is doing in a Transformers movie is unclear, but he brings a goofy dignity to the enterprise that elevates this chapter over its recent brethren. The storytelling is also an upgrade. For one thing, we finally are given a believable explanation for the purpose of Stonehenge. Mark Wahlberg, who joined the franchise in the fourth film, the unwatchably long and convoluted Transformers: Age of Extinction, is back as the scruffy inventor Cade Yeager. As this story opens, Cade is one of the few humans who still has some affection for Autobots, the robotic immigrants from outer space who mean well but whose war with the Decepticons has resulted in all sorts of havoc on Earth. The rest of humanity is still annoyed with them for wrecking a perfectly good city, Chicago, earlier in the franchise. Autobots and Decepticons transform into motor vehicles and other things, a special-effects sight that apparently never grows old for fans of the series. And they have what seems like an ever-changing back story. The one conjured here involves Arthur, Lancelot, Merlin and the Dark Ages, which is where Mr. Hopkins’s character, Edmund Burton, comes in. He’s a sort of keeper of the Arthurian/Transformers legend, and he knows that a long-forecast climactic battle is coming for control of Merlin’s staff, an ancient relic that has formidable powers when wielded by the right person. In this case that person is Viviane (Laura Haddock), a British scholar who is skeptical of the Round Table tales and is also just the right age to be a potential romantic interest for Cade. As for Stonehenge, well, without giving away too much, let’s just say that invaders from space are coming to suck the life out of our planet, and the great monument is not merely the clunkiest calendar ever made.».
