Inizia in medias res King Arthur: Il potere della spada, durante la battaglia cruciale per Camelot, con l'assalto finale di Mordred al castello di Uther Pendragon. Elefanti gargantueschi, soldati inceneriti dalla magia, mura e ponti che crollano come fossero costruiti con il lego, ma nemmeno un nemico tanto spaventoso può alla fine nulla contro il potere di Excalibur. Sarà invece un tradimento a segnare le sorti del regno e a far sì che il giovane figlio del Re, salvato dal fiume come Mosé, cresca tra i vicoli e i bordelli di Londinum. L'usurpatore teme il prescelto capace di estrarre la spada dalla roccia e obbliga tutti gli uomini in età a fare il tentativo circondati da guardie pronti a catturarlo e farlo immediatamente giustiziare. Il film di Guy Ritchie mantiene gli elementi del mito arturiano ma li rimescola, in un (troppo) concitato mix di epica, magia, corti, foreste e combutte tra gangster.

Succede così che Mordred sia un nemico del padre di Artù anziché suo figlio, che Merlino non incontri nemmeno Artù e che altri personaggi chiave della saga non appaiano né siano citati. Questo anche perché il progetto, fin da quando si è iniziato a parlarne nel 2014, prevedeva di dipanarsi su sei film, e dunque ci sarà tempo (se lo vorrà il box office) per gli eclatanti assenti come Ginevra, Lancillotto e Morgana. Su Merlino poi Ritchie deve aver cambiato idea strada facendo, visto che aveva cercato senza successo di dare la parte a Idris Elba e dunque doveva avere un ruolo assai più sostanzioso della piccolissima comparsa rimasta nel film, dove nemmeno lo si vede in volto (rimandando così la questione del casting). A differenza di altri blockbuster e franchise dove il regista è spesso l'ultimo arrivato, quando ormai la sceneggiatura è già stata ritoccata infinite volte da scrittori e produttori, qui Ritchie è coinvolto fin quasi dal principio e si vede che il film è del tutto suo. Trasforma infatti Artù nel più tipico dei suoi personaggi, un piccolo gangster di Londra (qui Londinum), astuto e dalla faccia tosta, ma in fondo pure dal cuore d'oro - non per niente è soprannominato Art, che in inglese suona un po' come Heart. E con l'ambientazione urbana arrivano anche situazioni tipiche del cinema di Ritchie a partire dall'interrogatorio in cui, a uno dei capi delle guardie (interpretato da Michael McElhatton, il Roose Bolton de Il trono di spade), Art i suoi due compari raccontano una loro impresa saltando avanti e indietro tra inezie e cose rilevanti. L'infanzia di Art in città è poi riassunta in una sequenza da videoclip, dove vediamo la crescita accelerata del ragazzo tra pestaggi e piccoli furti, ma fin da piccolo già con la saggezza di nascondere il proprio denaro. Questi elementi dovrebbero nelle intenzioni dare una ventata d'aria fresca a una saga arcinota, ma il risultato è controproducente perché sono espedienti che erano già derivativi quando Ritchie era ancora un regista alle prime armi, figuriamoci ora. ...» (Andrea Fornasiero).

Mordred and his army make their way to Camelot and begin laying waste to the kingdom of Britain as they ride on the backs of massive war elephants. King Uther Pendragon (Eric Bana) leads his own army against Mordred's forces. Uther rides his horse to reach Mordred's stronghold while wielding his mighty sword Excalibur. With one swing, Uther slays Mordred and puts an end to his reign of terror. Soon after, Uther's brother Vortigern (Jude Law) leads a coup against Uther and the kingdom. Vortigern takes his wife Elsa (Katie McGrath) underground to a pit where he kills Elsa and spills her blood to achieve a stronger form. Uther gets his wife Igraine (Poppy Delevignge) and young son Arthur out of the castle as Vortigern's minions, the Blacklegs, are closing in on them. As an adult (now played by Charlie Hunnam), Arthur grows stronger and more cocky and has made friends with Rubio (Freddie Fox) and Percival (Craig McGinlay) Arthur tends to his friend Lucy (Nicola Wren), a prostitute, who was previously assaulted by a group of Vikings. Arthur is later called to speak to a commander after Blacklegs raid the brothel. Arthur outed a man in hiding named Goosefat Bill Turner (Aiden Gillen), and he got into an altercation with the Vikings for hurting Lucy and forcing them to give up their wages. The commander tells Arthur that those Vikings were protected by the king, and therefore Arthur must pay for his crime. Arthur is taken and put onto a ship with other men headed for the kingdom. The Blacklegs also kill Lucy in front of Arthur and the other prostitutes just to spite him. ...».
