Nasce come una serie di light novel scritta da Hajime Kanzaka nel corso degli anni Novanta. La storia racconta di Lina Inverse e Gourry Gabriev e delle loro avventure, facendo la parodia dei giochi di ruolo fantasy. L'anime si compone di cinque serie televisive, di cui le prime tre Slayers, Slayers Next e Slayers Try realizzate tra il 1995 e il 1997 da J.C. Staff che si compongono di 26 episodi ciascuna per un totale di 78 puntate, trasmesse su Tv Tokyo. Infine la quarta e la quinta realizzate tra il 2008 e il 2009, Slayers Revolution e Slayers Evolution-R, di 13 episodi ciascuna, quindi complessivamente la serie TV conta ben 104 puntate. Le stagioni sono state tutte dirette da Takashi Watanabe. Alle serie seguono numerosi OAV e film pubblicati successivamente alla serie televisiva, ma che si svolgono in realtà prima degli eventi di quest'ultima ed in cui Lina è accompagnata da una maga assillante e presuntuosa di nome Naga. La storia si svolge in un mondo medievale dove la magia occupa un ruolo fondamentale. La serie animata è organizzata in cicli dal tono inizialmente umoristico, che poi lentamente diventano sempre più seri, tanto che alla fine culminano in eventi nei quali il destino dell'universo è appeso ad un filo. Tuttavia anche i momenti più seri sono smorzati da piccole gag comiche, dando a Slayers un tocco leggero. L'adattamento italiano della serie televisiva è stato curato da Mediaset, che ne ha modificato il titolo in Un incantesimo dischiuso tra i petali del tempo per Rina per le prime tre serie, trasmettendone una versione pesantemente censurata su Italia 1 tra il 1997 e il 1998. Dal 5 ottobre 2009 è andata in onda su Hiro la 4ª stagione con il titolo originale, stesso discorso per la quinta trasmessa a partire dal 31 ottobre 2009. Nelle repliche su Italia 2 del 2013 viene utilizzato il titolo The Slayers per le prime due serie e quello originale per la terza. ...».

For its time the animation was also very good, though admittedly by today's standards it appears much older than it actually is. All in all Slayers was an iconic show that proved to be entertaining even in this day and age. The show begins by introducing Lina Inverse, a sorceress extraordinaire who is a famed bandit killer, possesses immense magical power, and has the underdeveloped flat chest of a thirteen year old. She spends her days seeking treasure, eating, and taking on jobs for gold coins. Generally speaking she is a good guy, er... girl, but isn't exactly the most careful person in the world when it comes to blowing things up. In other words to employ, know, befriend, or go up against Lina Inverse is to invite a lot of pain into your life.
