Trama e commenti: fantasymagazine.it: «Per raccogliere un milione di dollari a favore dell'American Cancer Society, volontari produrranno un film sull'epica saga sassone. Beowulf sarà un esploratore di colore che, partito dall'Africa con l'obiettivo di raggiungere i confini del globo, troverà la terra dei Normanni. Un altro Beowulf in arrivo, e con questo i film in preparazione sono addirittura tre. Ma questa volta è qualcosa di davvero particolare. Dopo il film Beowulf & Grendel con Gerard Butler (sugli schermi entro il 2005), e la versione di Robert Zemeckis e Neil Gaiman (data di uscita prevista: 2007), la terza versione dell'epica saga sarà prodotta con costi molto più bassi e di certo non potrà contare su una grande distribuzione. Ma il progetto nasce per una bella causa: trovare fondi per la lotta contro il cancro. L'intero cast sarà formato da volontari. L'adattamento cinematografico, intitolato Beowulf: Prince of the Geats, inizierà a essere girato la prossima estate in Norvegia e in Sudafrica. Ecco così arrivare un'altra interpretazione della storia. La produzione, infatti, afferma che sebbene il padre di Beowulf si fosse unito in matrimonio nella tribù dei Geati, non è detto che anche il figlio fosse di quell'etnia. Non ci sono mai state documentazioni su quali fossero le sue vere origini. Per questo, il film presenterà Beowulf come un esploratore africano che si è messo in viaggio fino alla Fine del Mondo e ha incontrato i popoli vichinghi. Beowulf sarà interpretato dall'attore di colore Jeff Carpenter» (marzo 2005).

This is a 'no-budget' film, not a low-budget, a no-budget. The aim of this movie was to maximise profit for charity. All of the actors, camera men, set designers and constructors provided their services and materials for free in order that 100% of the takings for the production would be a contribution for cancer research. This should not be taken as a justification in itself for anything wanting in the film, and there is quite a bit that is wanting, but there is also much that is superlative. It is never the less a tribute to those who have dedicated their time and those who have given their money to make it happen. This production has apparently annoyed some born-again-pagans because of its casting and envelope story which serves as an explanation for it. But the film does say that it is 'Based on the Epic Poem', not that it is the epic poem. Scott Wegener's film does not pretend to be a faithful depiction of Beowulf like the movie Outlander does not pretend to be a faithful depiction of Beowulf. I am not averse to Jayshan Jackson and Damon Lynch III playing Beowulf and both actors turned in weighty performances which did the character justice. Damon made a convincing older version of Jayshan as well. The only caveat that I had was that the Beowulf character was a 2nd generation immigrant in Norse society, and as such would integrate with the society he has been born into even if he percieved himself as an 'outsider'. We know that a 2nd generation African (Septimus Severus) as a garrison commander of Hadrian's wall in the Roman period and all of the evidence we have of him is that he totally integrated himself into the society he found himself in. In terms of clothing and manner, he addopted the Roman form, he 'favoured the purple'. With this in mind, I found that within the story concept, Jayshan and Damon's dreadlocks were out of place and slightly irritating. ...».
