Come nel film di Jacob Cheung Andy Lau, paladino cristologico, si immola in nome del fato al servizio del pubblico, unico vero protagonista in un cast di glorie vecchie (Ti Lung, Yueh Hua) e nuove (Andy On, Vanness Wu). La regia è altisonante, ai limiti della superbia, soprattutto quando, per dimostrare la propria indiscussa perizia tecnica, Daniel Lee, ormai avvezzo al narcisismo autoreferenziale, abusa di step-framing, flash back e montaggio velocissimo, fino ad abbagliare e stordire la platea. La sostanza del romanzo di origine e i combattimenti cruenti, capitanati dal co-protagonista sornione Sammo Hung, ottimo nel ruolo, e da Yuen Tak, impediscono il collasso di un gigante dai piedi d'argilla creato a tavolino per spopolare ma non sufficientemente elegante per tenere fede alle premesse. Girato direttamente in mandarino, coprodotto con Cina e Corea del Sud, che stranamente non pretende di avere un nome di punta in cartellone, è un kolossal imponente ma imperfetto, che nel tentativo di non scontentare nessuno non riesce né a convincere né a deludere» (Matteo Di Giulio).
