beautiful miller's daughter Marie is not only very beautiful, but also clever
and self-confident. Her father is dreaming of a career as miller to the royal
court. He boasts about Marie and claims that she can spin straw into gold. The
greedy Minister believes the miller's every word: The royal treasury is empty -
this golden girl would be more than welcome. He abducts the girl and takes her
to the castle. She is to spin straw into gold. All Marie's protestations that
her father had exaggerated are to no avail. Suddenly a little troll appears
before her as if from nowhere and promises to spin the straw into gold. For his
help he demands Marie's ring. The next morning all the straw has vanished, the
chamber is full of gold coins. The Minister demands more gold from Marie and has
more straw brought in. For three nights the troll helps Marie to spin straw into
gold. On the third night Marie has nothing more to give the troll. She promises
him her first child if she becomes Queen. The King finally finds Marie and takes
her as his wife. Then the manikin appears again and demands Marie's child. She
refuses and the cunning troll suggests a deal. If she can guess his name within
three days, then she may keep her child. Everyone in the kingdom has to help
find the manikin's name. When the troll comes to get the child, Marie tells him
his name. In his rage Rumpelstiltskin tears himself apart. Everyone is happy and
the evil Minister is driven out of the court».
