Se in passato era stato il cinema ad ospitare le avventure dell’eroe che ruba ai ricchi per dare ai poveri (ad esempio col celebre film di Walt Disney del 1973, o con la pellicola interpretata da Kevin Costner nel 1991, passando due anni dopo alla parodia di Mel Brooks), adesso è il turno della televisione: è Rete4 ad ospitare la nuova versione telefilmica inglese, in onda dal 2006 sulla Bbc, per 13 episodi trasmessi in sei serate. La storia prende spunto dalla leggenda popolare di Robin di Locksley che, tornato dalla Guerra Santa, si trova in disaccordo con l’amministrazione tirannica dello Sceriffo di Nottingham, i cui affari vengono gestiti dal losco Guy di Gisborne, vero e proprio antagonista di Robin. Basterà una puntata sola perché Robin capisca che per salvare la sua gente dall’avidità dei due dovrà mettersi in prima linea e lottare, nascondendosi nella foresta di Sherwood. Protagonista della serie è l’esordiente Jonas Armostrong. Una scelta non casuale, che ci dice già tutto sul tipo di pubblico che la serie vuole catturare –missione compiuta-. A lui si aggiungono Keith Allen nel ruolo dello Sceriffo di Nottingham, Lucy Griffiths nei panni della bella e coraggiosa Marian, figlia dello sceriffo, Richard Armitage in quelli di Sir Guy di Gisborne mentre Sam Troughton è il simpatico Much, servo fedele di Robin. Un gruppo –inclusi altri uomini che puntata dopo puntata affiancheranno il protagonista-, dal carisma e dal fascino non indifferente. Ma le frecce che la serie ha dalla sua parte sono anche ritmo, freschezza, dialoghi ben costruiti ed una regia che “gioca” coi personaggi e che si concede, nella prima puntata, anche una citazione, dedicata a Il Gladiatore».

It is a rather pointless exercise, but potentially quite fun nevertheless. What makes Robin Hood, a new series on BBC America beginning tomorrow night, amount to such a good time is that it effortlessly prompts you to try. Was Robin Hood a John Edwards populist? Certainly he built his brand speaking out against the injustice that was the two Nottinghams. But would he have considered calling for universal tax increases, even if the tax money would finance a universal health care system and combat, say, the plague and all those poisonings from grain-based fungal infections? Arguably, he wouldn’t have allowed himself. Versions of the Robin Hood legend have been legion, and though nearly all have focused on his distaste for inequality, fewer have made such emphatic use of his views on tax policy. This British series is briskly paced and amusingly corny. He owned an estate, but it is no longer his; still he retains his sense of noblesse oblige. He hates the taxes levied on the poor and he hates the tax collectors who go after his inadequately sheltered and fed countrymen. He uses more of his time going after evil bureaucrats and their policies of terror than he does redistributing wealth from the well off to the less fortunate. He is not a big-government guy; what he wants, after all, is a lot less Sheriff of Nottingham, not a lot more Sheriff of Nottingham. The series presents a Robin Hood perfectly suited to Tony Blair-era centrism, hardly a character who could read as an easy metaphor for the expansion of the welfare state».
