Corea e wuxia pian: un matrimonio che non s'ha da fare. Nonostante i reiterati tentativi in questo senso, i “cappa e spada” provenienti dalla penisola coreana stentano a convincere. Le ragioni sono molteplici e in buona parte da ricondurre alla sostanziale assenza di tradizione di un genere quintessenziale per la cinematografia cinese e corpo estraneo figlio del trend per quella coreana. Non è un caso, quindi, se spesso a Seoul si fa ricorso a maestranze di Hong Kong - con sgradevole effetto di "duplicato da importazione" - come nel caso di Bichunmoo, precedente lavoro di Kim Young-jun. Se Bichunmoo fu un successo, sulla scia della moda febbrile seguita a La tigre e il dragone, per Il potere della spada le cose sono andate diversamente, quantomeno in patria (all'estero ha goduto di una distribuzione lusinghiera, tanto da essere uscito anche qui in Italia. D'altronde una componente fondamentale del wuxia è fondata sulla leggerezza, dei corpi come delle anime: si vedano i monaci volanti di King Hu (A Touch of Zen), sostanzialmente anti-gravitazionali e guidati da una spiritualità aerea e superiore, capace di innalzarsi al di sopra delle miserie terrene. Il potere della spada ripudia il misticismo per rendere più terreno e concreto lo scontro tra Bene e Male, finendo per ingabbiarsi in duelli reiterati e prolissi: la scomposizione del montaggio in miriadi di frame disorienta chi osserva, ma, anziché trasmettere una sensazione di onnipotenza nei gesti degli eroi, provoca solo confusione in eccesso. Tra stellette ninja (il villain sotto mentite spoglie in fondo è sempre il Giappone) e super-donne spadaccine che recitano un ruolo da protagoniste, la vicenda di armi e di amori di Il potere della spada scorre su binari convenzionali, alternando accenni impalpabili di commedia (volontaria) a sequenze di indubbia ilarità (involontaria), come la schermaglia subacquea degna di una parodia di Agente 007 Operazione Tuono. Ancora esami di riparazione per il wuxia Made in Korea: i buoni propositi continuano a dimostrarsi insufficienti».
