«In Lauri Timonen's debut film, Orleans is exactly three kilometres away, but
when Jeanne d'Arc (Nuppu Koivu) decides to shoot up and leave the convent, she
does not walk – she hitchhikes. Her journey is short, and so is the film, but it
still has a substantial wedge of cinematic history behind it. The Writer (Heikki
Metsämäki), whose debut novel his publisher-to-be is refusing to buy, is
crashing out in the Honolulu Bar in Orleans. In years of war, pacifism is not in
fashion. Come night, Jeanne mixes with the resistance, but resistance always
comes with a price... "Ham, let me!" was the key line of one of the Aki
Kaurismäki classics. The crucial line of Timonen's Jeanne d'Arc is: "Got a fire?"
It is also the climax of the story: the last cigarette is lit on foolhardy lips,
mocking all prohibitions, taboos and conventions... déjà-vu! The director of the
film could come directly from the Cahiers du Cinema generation: he is
self-assured and proud, original, black and white, imbued with cinema and
literature».
