Sono dieci anni che cerca quel libro, da quando sua figlia Meggie ne aveva tre; da quando, l'ultima notte in un cui lo ha letto ad alta voce, sua moglie Resa è scomparsa all'interno del mondo fantastico di Inkheart, alla corte medievale del malvagio Capricorn. Pochi lo sanno, ma Mo è una lingua di fata: con la lettura può richiamare alla realtà i personaggi dei romanzi, ma rimandarli indietro può essere molto più complicato. Ora, con quella copia del libro in mano, Mo è deciso ha ritrovare Resa e, che lo voglia o meno, Meggie farà di tutto per aiutarlo. Il ponte tra cinema e letteratura esiste da sempre, ma oggi è ormai un'autostrada e la trasformazione porta con sé pregi e difetti. Se poi non si è un minimo avvezzi alla fuga di fantasia, tentanti dal brivido e permeabili al sentimento, come nell'insuperato La storia infinita, non restano che i difetti. È più avventuroso farsi strada su un ponticello di corda traballante o raggiungere la stessa meta su un'automobile, fermandosi solo per pagare il pedaggio al casello? Il problema di Inkheart è proprio qui: quando tutto è possibile - leggere un paragrafo del Mago di Oz [il film] e sollevare un tornado, inventare tre frasi poco ispirate e lasciare a loro il compito di (ri)scrivere il finale - resta ben poco di appassionante...».
