Shantaram directs this biopic about noted 16th century Marathi poet Sant Eknath and his impassioned criticism of society's discrimination against the lower castes. Eknath (Bal Gandharva) becomes a social outcast when he not only feeds the "untouchables" before the elite Brahmins during a prayer meeting at his house, but he later ventures to one of the untouchables' houses to eat there. The recalcitrant Mahant (Chandramohan) manages to recruit Eknath's son, Hari Pandit (K. Narayan Kale), as one of a growing list of people opposing the poet's actions. The poet eventually defends himself to an angry mob by reading the poems of Pradyananda Shastri of Kashi» (Jonathan Crow).
