690 d.C. La reggente Wu si appresta ad essere incoronata imperatrice (prima
donna nella storia cinese), ma i molti nemici e cospiratori giocano le loro
ultime carte per impedirlo. Nel frattempo la costruzione di un gigantesco Buddha
in onore della reggente viene rallentata da alcune morti misteriose per
autocombustione; sul caso viene chiamato a indagare il detective ribelle Dee,
già esiliato dalla stessa reggente. C'era un tempo (gli anni '80-'90) in cui al
nome di Tsui Hark era stata giustapposta l'etichetta – semplicistica ma
indicativa – di “Steven Spielberg di Hong Kong”. Dopo un decennio trascorso
seguendo progetti eterogenei ma spesso deludenti, è come se il regista si fosse
ricordato di quella che è la sua specificità, nonché il suo maggior talento.
Avvalendosi di capitali della Cina continentale e sfruttandone in pieno i mezzi,
Hark confeziona infatti un romanzo d'avventura che potrebbe tranquillamente
essere tratto da un fumetto dell'era d'oro della nona arte per come sa unire
ingredienti semplici ma paradossalmente divenuti irraggiungibili per i più:
divertimento, azione, qualche risata, suspense e ancora divertimento. Proprio
come ai bei tempi in cui Indiana Jones faceva andare la frusta. ...».

«China's first master detective is looking for answers to some burning

Tsui Hark. Di Renjie (Andy Lau), nicknamed Detective Dee, is a law officer of

Renjie finds himself on the wrong side of prison bars when he dares to publicly
criticize Wu Zetian (Carina Lau), who has become China's first female emperor.
While Wu Zetian doesn't care for Di Renjie's opinions, she can't dispute his
skills as a detective, and after eight years in jail she has him released so he
can get to the bottom of a mystery. Two members of Wu Zetian's court have died
under bizarre circumstances -- after stepping outside, they suddenly exploded
into flames. Are the gods angry with Wu Zetian and her underlings, or is a
clever saboteur at work? Di Renjie was inspired by the exploits of the
real-life Di Renjie, who is credited with pioneering modern detective techniques
during the Tang Dynasty (618 A.D. to 907 A.D.)».
