«The story of Conrad V the last of the
Hohenstaufen dynasty. Main title (1). Conrad, Elizabeth of Bavaria and Frederick
of Austria entertain themselves. The Italian legation arrive at the castle gate
and a messenger is sent to Conrad. Conrad, Elizabeth and Frederick meet the
legation in the throne room. They invite Conrad to Italy [to recapture Sicily
from Charles of Anjou]. Conrad accepts. At the castle gate he takes leave of his
mother and with Frederick and an escort sets off for Italy. The entourage ride
along a track. [Missing section of film]. Conrad and Frederick make their escape
(?) by foot. They arrive at the castle of Baron Frangipane who feigns
friendliness but who secretly writes to Charles of Anjou and Pope Clement IV
[the enemies of Conrad]. While Conrad and Frederick play chess, the delegates
from Charles and the Pope meet with the Baron. During their negotiations Robert
of Lavena (Charles' delegate) presents the Baron with a chest of treasure, much
to the consternation of the Pope's delegate, Cardinal Giodano of Terracina. The
Baron agrees to hand over Conrad to Charles of Anjou. The Cardinal leaves the
meeting and tries to warn Conrad. However the Baron arrives with Robert and some
guards and they arrest Conrad and Frederick. In prison Conrad and Frederick
mourn their fate. A man, two guards and a priest enter. The man reads the death
warrant for Conrad who is consoled by the priest. In the market place of Naples,
Conrad is brought to the scaffold and made ready for the beheading (712ft). Note
